Bhatkallys News Bureau Bhatkal 16 Oct 2017: Jali Patan Panchayath organized its general body meeting on Monday here at Jali Patan Panchayath office in Bhatkal. Among the several agendas discussed at the meeting, the issue pertaining to the new building for Panchayath office was discussed for a major part of the meeting amidst a few heated arguments. Patan Panchayath currently posses two plots one on which the current office of Patan Panchayath is located and the other one is on which a head-over water supply tank is built already, legally making the land unavailable for any further construction, as the law doesn’t permit any construction because of the set-back that has to be left in all dimensions upto the elevated height of the said tank. Councilors proposed two more plots which are within the reach of Panchayath to utilise for the construction of its new office. One of which is currently possessed by Forest department as ‘Green Zone’ while the other proposal was to construct the new building at the Govt. High school’s campus which is hardly 500m away from the current office. Standing committee chairman Syed Aadam, spoke about the inconvenience faced by the people of areas like Venkatapur and Katvinkatta and said the current office is at least 12km away from their area making it inconvenient for the residents to visit the Panchayath office regularly and suggested for the Panchayath office to be moved somewhere into the Urban limits which should be easily accessible for residents of every ward of the Panchayath. Councilor Imran Lanka, argued for the office to be build on the Panchayath’s plot wherein the water tank is built and termed the construction of the Tank as ‘Illegal’ as the public road is located very next to the pillars of the water tank were in no set back has been left which is meant for public safety as laid down by the law and called for the demolition of the tank to proceed with Panchayath office in the said land which will be very convenient for people  and that we are here to think about the betterment of public at large. Several other councilors stood for the office to be built either on the same plot of the office or to be moved to the High School campus. The topic went on to be discussed for more than 2.30 hrs resulting in the president calling in for the voting procedure. Seven each votes were casted for green zone and high school campus which is located  merely 500m away from the current office. One vote was casted in favor of setting up the office at Venkatapur while one member didn’t participate in the voting leaving it for the president’s vote to decide where the Patan Panchayath office has to be constructed. It was later decided to hold a special general body meeting as few members were absent at the meeting and to further decide the issue in the said SGP. Chief Officer then presented the expenditure report with a few guidelines before other agendas including water supply and others were discussed.
