The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) on Monday increased the power tariff by an average of 13 paise a unit for all the consumer categories to bridge the revenue deficit of all the five Escoms (electricity supply companies) in the state. The new rates announced by the three-member quasi judicial body led by former bureaucrat M.R. Sreenivasa Murthy comes into effect for the power consumption recorded from April 1. The revision comes in the wake of tariff petions filed by all the five Escoms in the state in December 2014 seeking a hike of 80 paise a unit. This is the seventh hike in the last five and half years beginning from November 2009 and the previous one had been effected in May 2014 when the tariff had been hiked by 32 paise.   The Hindu
