People in Bhatkal turns to Oysters as medical administration advises to not eat mussels this season

Bhatkal 16 March 2019:(Bhatkallys News Bureau)As the trade of Mussels seen a down fall in coastal region especially in Bhatkal Taluka, The fishermen are now engaged in collecting ‘Oysters’ as an alternative to trade over Mussels in the fishmarkets of Bhatkal. As the season of Oysters(Commonly called as ‘Kalva’) has already started in the Taluka, most of the women especially at the lake of Mundalli, Venkatapur, Tengingundi, Gorte and other places engage themselves in collecting the Oysters from which are attached to the rocks near by the lake from 6 to 9 in the morning. As the demand for Mussels in the fish market of Bhatkal has seen a down fall after number of people fell sick followed by which the Taluka medical administration had advised not eat them for next few months, the people here have now opted Oysters as an alternative over Mussels. The season which will continue for next 3 months till the rainy season starts, have created a self employment to the locals here. (Bhatkallys News Bureau)
