Over 3500 farmers committed suicide in last five years in Karnataka; says report of Karnataka Agricultural Department

Bengaluru 27 Dec 2017: Karnataka Agricultural Department(KAD) has submitted a reported that discloses about 3,515 farmers have committed suicide in last 5 years (i.e April 2013 - November 2017) in the state. Among these about 2,525 farmers took the extreme step on their life due to the drought and crop failure in the state.
Director of KAD B.Y Shrinivas stated that, Although there was more than average rainfall this year in the state, still over 624 suicide cases have been reported across the state.
A majority of the figure of 3515 case were that of Sugarcane farmers, he further added that action has been taken against the banks who harassed the farmers to repay the loans with higher interest rates.
Over 1332 cases have been registered and nearly 600 people have been arrested in this connection, Shrinivas further informed.
