Bhatkal, 29 March,2026: (Bhatkallys News Bureau) The Central Fitra Committee, Bhatkal, has distributed more than 1.07 lakh kilograms of rice to 2,144 families across Bhatkal and surrounding regions as part of its Eid-ul-Fitr initiative this year.
The distribution covered areas including Bhatkal, Honnavar, Shirur, Kundapur, Kumta, Ankola and the Sharavathi belt. The rice was distributed on the night of Eid itself, with each family receiving an average of 50 kg. Larger and more vulnerable families were given up to one quintal of rice.
For the fifth consecutive year, basmati rice was also distributed, with around 10,700 kg provided at the rate of 5 kg per family across all regions.
Convener of the Central Fitra Committee, Maulana Mohammed Ilyas Nadwi Bhatkali, said the initiative has been expanded over the past four years to include more areas such as Gersoppa, Hiranagadde, Sadlgi and nearby parts of Honnavar and Ankola. He added that families who do not consume boiled rice were given sona masuri rice instead.
This year, 55 zones were formed across different localities for collection and distribution of fitra. Contributions were received not only locally but also from Bhatkal Muslim organisations based in Gulf countries.
A fresh survey was conducted across all zones, which resulted in a reduction of around 100 families compared to previous years. The committee has been carrying out this collective distribution of fitra in Bhatkal for the past 41 years, and the scale of the initiative has grown steadily.
Maulana Ilyas acknowledged the support of Bhatkal-based groups in the Gulf, local youth, sports centres and religious scholars for their continued cooperation.
Two review meetings were held during Ramadan to plan and strengthen the process. A post-Eid review and gathering was held on March 28, 2026 at Al Hilal Association Club, Makhdoom Colony, Bhatkal.
The meeting was attended by representatives of Gulf-based Bhatkal Muslim organisations, office-bearers of local religious, educational and social institutions, members of both Jamaats, Tanzeem, Anjuman and Jamia, along with community leaders and scholars.
The session was moderated by Deputy Convener Syed S.M. Parvez. Maulana Mohammed Ilyas presented the detailed report of this year’s fitra collection and distribution, including accounts, and spoke about the importance of the initiative and its growth over four decades.
Several speakers shared their views and appreciated the efforts of the committee, including Anjuman Hami-e-Muslimeen General Secretary Ishaq Shahbandri, Additional Secretary Jukaku Ismail, Majlis Islah-o-Tanzeem Secretary Jailani Shahbandri, Jamia Islamia Bhatkal Principal Maulana Maqbool Ahmed Kobatte Nadwi, Jamaat-ul-Muslimeen Vice-President Maulana Abdul Mateen Muniri, Deputy Qazi Maulana Ayman Qamri Nadwi, auditor Pillor Sadiq, Deputy Qazi Maulana Abdul Noor Fakardey Nadwi, former municipal president Altaf Kharuri, Bhatkal Muslim Khaleej Council Secretary Maulana Sabir Ali Akbar Nadwi, Dubai Jamaat Vice-President Imran Khatib and Maulana Ammar Ahmed Nadwi from the Eastern Province.
