Now CCTV cameras for all college classes

Zaorez Shabab Bengaluru 23 Sept 2017: In a move that has annoyed the students community of Degree colleges, all colleges -Government, aided and unaided have been made mandatory to install CCTV cameras not only in campus but also inside the classrooms within a month. Department of Collegiate Education (DCE), on Friday issued a circular instructing the degree colleges to install CCTV cameras inside the classroom. Ajay Nagabhushan, Commissioner, DCE said the decision was taken in the “in the interest of students’ safety” and on the recommendations of Karnataka State Women’s Commission. He further added the management of all colleges should take this up on priority basis and install CCTV cameras by following the regulations of the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTTP) Act 1999. Chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Women Nagalakshmi Bai said the recommendations were made to the DCE keeping the safety of girl students in mind . “The department should also specify the technical details of the camera. In many instances, we have seen owing to the poor quality of cameras, the footage is extremely blurred,” she said. Students Community not happy The move has certainly irked the students community who have started raising questions on the level of Surveillance. Speaking exclusively to www.Bhatkallys.com over the phone, Nazia Qureshi, a final year student at a private law college in Bengaluru termed the move as 'Too much of surveillance'. She said “This is too much, of course, safety of girls students is important. But installing cameras inside the classroom is not at all a good move to implement. This will restrain our activities in the classroom and the level of surveillance will just increase. This also breaches our privacy even in an all girls college as Teachers will monitor us using the the camera.”
