Bhatkallys News Bureau/ I. Zaorez Shabab Bhatkal, 28 Oct, 2017: Turning a blind eye to broken speed bumps in Bhatkal, local municipality officials are blaming heedless residents for the poor condition of roads in town. Speaking with Bhatkallys.com, Venkatesh, Chief Officer, Bhatkal Town Municipality said, “We have not received any complaints from either residents or ward councillors about the speed humps in Bhatkal. Once there is a formal complaint – we can present it in our general body meeting and get the necessary approvals to repair any roads under our jurisdiction." Interestingly, small sections of speed bumps are regularly vandalised to allow motorbikes to speed through narrow roads and by lanes. A visit to Aminuddin Road in Bhatkal’s Nawayath Colony presents the issue on a larger scale - with all speed bumps missing a section. Cutting through gaps and speeding on internal roads has caused hundreds of accidents in Bhatkal. Most speed bumps fail to stop speeding motor bikes or three-wheelers as gaps and missing sections allow reckless driving. The chief officer confirmed action would be taken if a formal complaint was registered by the local councillor or residents in the area. Aftab Damudi, the local Panchayath councillor for Aminuddin Road, noted the issue would be presented to the chief officer by 30th October and the speed bumps would be repaired at the earliest.
