Bhatkallys News | January 12,2016 BHATKAL -- Pressure has been mounted on the state government for approval of the new Underground Drainage (UGD) scheme  for Bhatkal town costing Rs. 232.07 crore. Talking to bhatkallys.com over the phone, Mankal Vaidya, Bhatkal MLA, said, "efforts are on from our side to get the UGD project included in the next Budget that will come up in March 2017. I am pursuing this with the government." The project is already pending with the state government and awaiting approval. The blue print for the UGD project for Bhatkal was drawn up and was forwarded to the Government. The proposed UGD project is set to cover the projected population (2015 figures) of 98,570 under Bhatkal Town. The KUWS &DB Division Dharwad will execute the project after it obtains the sanction. According to an official at KUWS & DB, Karwar, "The project is to cover all areas of the town with a total sewer line length of 110 km. The existing sewer line, runs through 19.64 kms and does not cover many places in the town." The project envisions a generated sewage capacity of 9.5 MLD (for STP) for the entire Bhatkal town. The entire sewage generated in the town would be transported to the proposed STP for scientific treatment before it is let into the streams and river. Ten wet wells are also part of the project. The existing underground sewage network laid in the town some decades ago is replete with many problems. There is seepage in the network at many places resulting in the contamination of wells.
