Dubai: Hassled motorists will be relieved that the long-standing petrol shortage in Sharjah, resulting from the closure of dozens of petrol stations since early 2012, could soon be a thing of the past.
A senior official in Adnoc has told Gulf News that petrol stations purchased by the company in the northern emirates will open by the end of June. Adnoc has purchased more than 70 petrol stations belonging to Emarat, Enoc and Eppco.
Adnoc’s acquiring of Emarat stations in Sharjah has given hope to residents that the problem of fuel shortages will be resolved soon.
Mohammad Abbad, a Sharjah resident, said: “Currently the situation is very difficult. I always make sure that I refuel my car before entering Sharjah because since the crisis began, the petrol stations that are open are too far between. “The recent development between Adnoc and Emarat gives us hope that the authorities are working towards resolving the issue.”
Explaining the reasons behind the delays, the Adnoc official said that the takeover process is ongoing and Adnoc is doing its best to finish work on time. “It’s taking some time because there are so many stations. We have to change all the systems in these petrol stations. These changes include managerial, financial, and technical systems,” he said.
Priority to industrial areas
He added: “All petrol stations will be prepared with full service facilities, like car washing facilities, food courts, oil and filter changing, as well as Adnoc Oasis stores.” The official noted that the openings of petrol stations are also being prioritised based on their area.
“Petrol stations in crowded and industrial areas are being given priority. Some of the stations in these areas have already opened up in Sharjah, while the rest are in the process of being opened up for service.”
On when exactly all stations are to be opened for service, the Adnoc official said, “the plan is to have all stations opened by the end of June.”   Gulf News
