Netrani Scuba Diving festival organized in Murdeshwar

Murdeshwar 08 Jan 2018: A two-day international scuba festival was organized at Netrani island in Murdeshwar of Uttara Kannada district from Saturday Jan 06-07. Netrani island, located 18 km off Murdeshwar coast, is an ideal place for diving due to its rich coral biodiversity and fish fauna.
Each day, 75 divers were taken to the island in three groups. Of the 150 registered participants, 20 per cent were foreigners. Underwater hockey, was also organized at R N Shetty swimming pool at Murdeshwar, and was one of the main attractions of the event.
For the non-divers, water sports, beach football, spike ball, photography exhibition, talks and screening on sea, creatures, coral, flora and fauna, beach cleaning and other events were organised. Screening of ‘Increase of Garbage in the Ocean and How to Tackle It’ and ‘Shark Full of Dollars’ (Over fishing and its negative impact)’ were also held on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Deputy Commissioner S S Nakul said the event was being organised to promote tourist destinations in the district. For more details on the festival, log on to www.netraniscubafest.com.
District in-charge minister RV Deshpande inaugurated the event and spoke about promoting the tourism in the district to send out the message of peace and harmony.
District administration officials along with Deshpande also enjoyed the scuba diving during the festival and dived into the waters with other registered participants.
