More water released from KRS to Tamil Nadu

MANDYA, July 14, 2016:Members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha staged a protest over the Karnataka Irrigation Department's decision. The Karnataka Irrigation Department on Wednesday increased discharge of water from the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) to Tamil Nadu to clear the July quota, as per the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) order. Tribunal award According to the final award of the CWDT, the State must release 34 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) of water to Tamil Nadu in July. This was why the quantum of outflow was increased at the rate of 10,500 cubic feet per second (cusecs) on Wednesday, a senior official at Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd. (CNNL), said. The inflow into the reservoir was at the rate of 19,575 cusecs at 6 a.m., the officer said. Meanwhile, the reservoir level stood at 94.6 ft on Wednesday morning. The reservoir had 108.83 ft of water in the corresponding day last year. The full reservoir level (FRL) is 124.8 ft. The dead storage level is 74 ft. Protests on highway After the discharge of water to Tamil Nadu, members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha staged a protest on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway at 6.30 p.m. They raised slogans against the State government and urged the Irrigation Department authorities to “immediately stop” the release of water to the neighbouring State.
