Monsoon arrives in Udupi, Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada

Mangalore, June 2, 2013, DHNS : Though no casualties have been reported, properties were damaged in some places With the onset of monsoon, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu districts have been receiving incessant rainfall since Saturday night. Though no casualties have been reported, properties were damaged in some places. An Omni car parked near a house at Naguri in Mangalore city was damaged as the compound wall of the house collapsed due to heavy rain. As there were a large number of marriages on Sunday in and around Mangalore, a number of people had no other option, but to travel amidst rains. On the other hand, the continuous rains have brought much relief to the people of the coast from the scorching heat they experienced in the last three months. Mangalore taluk received highest rainfall of 34.4 mm on Sunday, followed by Bantwal taluk with 15.5 mm, Sullia with 12.2 mm, Puttur with 7.05 mm and Belthangady received lowest rainfall of 2.8 mm. In Udupi Udupi district received 8.3 mm rainfall on Sunday. Udupi taluk recorded 16.4 mm rainfall, Kundapur taluk 8.2 mm and Karkala taluk 0.4 mm. No damages were reported in the district. In Kodagu With the early onset of monsoon in the State, various parts of Kodagu district received heavy rainfall on Sunday. Places including Madikeri city, Napoklu, Virajpet, Ponnampet, Srimangala, Shantalli and Bhagamandala have recorded considerably good rainfall. The rain that started on Sunday morning, gave a break for a while in between, and continued to lash again. There were traffic problems at important junctions of the city including in the city private bus stand. Traffic police had to struggle to manage the chaos. Umbrellas used by general public to protect themselves from the rain were of not much use as the rains accompanying winds drenched all those who took to streets. Shops saw a heavy rush of customers who thronged to buy raincoats and umbrellas as the monsoon downpour began all of a sudden on Saturday. Though the rain brought some of the usual problems along, it also brought smiles on people’s faces, especially the farmers. Some of the development works which were under progress were disrupted due to rains. On the other hand, agricultural activities have gained momentum in the rural areas of the district. Rainfall details Virajpet - 3.06 mm, Ponnampet - 2.04 mm, Srimangala - 5.0 mm, Hudikeri - 8.09 mm, Balele - 6.0 mm, Shantalli in Somwarpet - 4.04 mm, Madikeri - 2.08 mm, Bhagamandala - 6.02 mm, Napoklu - 1.4 mm, Sampaje - 7.6 mm.
