Miscreants attacks lorry; 1 injured

Bhatkal - 02 Oct 2011: A group of around 60 miscreants attacked a mini-lorry yesterday night at around 10:00 pm here at Sarpankatta NH-17 and injured one person. The injured has been identified as lorry driver, Rahmatullah Shaikh (26), a resident of Ice Factory area of Bhatkal
According to the lorry driver, some miscreants followed his vehicle from Shirur and when he reached near Sarpankatta, a mob of around 60 people stopped the lorry by blocking the road and started beating the passenger and the driver. The passengers managed to escape but the driver was caught and badly beaten-up. The police who came to rescue the driver also attacked but when more police arrived, the miscreants fled the scene.
According to the sources, the lorry was attacked because they thought it is transporting cattles.
The injured driver was admitted in Bhatkal Govt Hospital. When the news spread, large number of crowd started gathering and demanded strict action against those involved in this attack. Bhatkal DySP, Mr M Narayan, CPI, Mr Shiv Prakash, PSI, Mr Prakash Devadiga, Tanzeem General-secretary, Mr S M Syed Parvez and others were rushed to Govt Hospital and pacified the crowd.
Speaking to reporters, DySP, Mr M Narayan assured strict action against the miscreants and said, 'Presently four persons have been detained and more arrests will be made soon'.
A case has been registered at Bhatkal Police Station and the investigation is going on.
