MANGALURU: Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) joined the select band of airports in the country to offer free Wi-Fi allowing passengers quick and easy access to email, social networks and entertainment content. The service will be free for 30 minutes and thereafter will be charged at as per the available plans or as per usage hours after the free minutes. This type of service is available at many airports in the country on similar model. But unlike international airports where passengers are able to receive 60 minutes of free Wi-Fi access, at MIA it is free only for the first 30 minutes. MIA director JT Radhakrishna said that the speed available is up to 2 Mbps, and the signal strength has been good since it was launched on Saturday. "The signal strength was good when 40 to 50 users had logged in on Saturday," he said. The access will be available inside the terminal building at both domestic and international wings. The access is fairly simple. When user accesses the Wi-Fi network, a BSNL logo pops up in the browser and if the user presses the icon, the log-in interface pops up on the screen. The user will have to enter the name, mobile number following which OTP (one time password) would be sent via SMS. BSNL general manager GR Ravi said that the user fee will be Rs 30 for the first 30 minutes, after which Rs 50 will be charged for 60 minutes, Rs 90, for two hours and Rs 150 for 24-hour usage. He said foreign SIM card cannot access the Wi-Fi at the airport due to security concerns. There's a caveat. A mobile number which is registered for a Wi-Fi access can get the free 30-minute only three days a month. Globe Travels MD William D'Souza said that it is a good initiative and should have been done long back. "It will help passengers get connected in the absence of data access," he added. New food outlets Airport Authority of India has opened two food outlets in Mangaluru International Airport. A Travel Food Service (TFS), Mumbai, with franchisee of Cafe Coffee Day opened at the entrance of the departure bridge. Another stall is located at international security hold area for the international passengers, who are waiting for 1 - 2 hours in the hall. TFS will also open a food court in domestic security hold area and another staff canteen in parking area in August, stated J T Radhakrishna, airport director.
