Mangaluru: Indian Coast Guard rescues 31 fishermen adrift in Arabian Sea for 11 days

Mangaluru, Oct 26: In a dramatic mid-sea rescue, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) saved 31 fishermen who had been drifting helplessly for nearly 11 days after their fishing boat suffered a steering gear failure about 100 nautical miles off the Mangaluru coast.

The stranded vessel, IFB Sant Anton-I, belonging to Goa, lost control following a mechanical breakdown while at sea. With communications disrupted and the boat unable to manoeuvre, the crew endured rough weather and dwindling supplies before the ICG stepped in.

Despite challenging sea conditions, the Coast Guard launched an intensive search and rescue mission. The operation was coordinated using the patrol vessel ICGS Kasturba Gandhi and a Dornier surveillance aircraft deployed from Kochi.

“The distress call was received through maritime channels, and immediate action was initiated to locate and assist the stranded crew,” an ICG spokesperson confirmed.

On October 25, Coast Guard personnel reached the distressed fishing boat, provided technical and logistical support, and managed to rectify the steering defect at sea. Once repairs were completed, the Sant Anton-I was towed safely to Honnavar fishing harbour under escort.

“The fishermen were visibly exhausted but safe. Our teams ensured they received medical attention and essential supplies,” officials added.

The successful operation once again highlights the Indian Coast Guard’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives at sea and ensuring the safety of India’s vast maritime community.
