Two Indians were among the Haj pilgrims killed in the mishap at the Grand Mosque of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Nineteen other Indian pilgrims were also injured in the mishap that was caused by a construction crane, which crashed into the crowded Grand Mosque on Friday. Moniza Ahmad from West Bengal and Muameena Ismail from Kerala were killed in the accident, the Consulate General of India in Jeddah confirmed on Saturday. Vikas Swarup, spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, said the officials of the CGI in Jeddah had rushed to the scene immediately after the mishap at the Grand Mosque and had been "on the ground and monitoring the situation through the night”. The injured pilgrims were admitted to different hospitals in Mecca.B S Mubarak, Consul General of India in Jeddah and Noor Rahman Sheikh, Deputy Consul General, visited several government hospitals to meet the injured Indian Haj pilgrims on Saturday. Among the deceased, Ahmad’s pilgrimage to Mecca was facilitated by the Haj Committee of India, while Ismail’s was arranged by a private tour operator, ITL Tours and Travels. The pilgrimage of four of the injured was also arranged by the private bus operators, while the Haj Committee of India sent 15 of them. A press release issued by the Haj Committee of India headquartered in Mumbai stated that none of the injured was in critical condition. The Haj 2015 commenced on August 16 last. Altogether 1,36,020 pilgrims from India are expected to take part in the Haj this year with 1,00,020 through Haj Committee of India and remaining 36,000 through private tour operators. The Saudi Arabian government on Saturday announced in Riyadh and Jeddah that the annual pilgrimage would continue in spite of the accident that killed over 100 people. New Delhi’s plea to raise the Haj quota for pilgrims from India was turned down by the Saudi Arabian government, citing the ongoing project to expand the Al-Masjid al-Ḥarām (the Grand Mosque) in Mecca as the reason for its inability to accept any such request from any country. India had requested that the quota be raised to 1,41,890 in view of the latest estimate of Muslim population in the country. But Saudi Arabia agreed to allow only 1,36,020 pilgrims - just as much as were allowed in 2014 - from India. Riyadh maintained India’s Haj quota for 2015 at the level of the previous year.
