Kundapur lad wins India's first medal at Commonwealth games in Australia

Kundapur: A 25 yr old young weightlifter Gururaj from Kundapur has made the whole country proud by bagging first medal for India on very first day of the 21st Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast of Australia on Wednesday, April 4.
Gururaj won silver in the men's 56kg category by lifting total weight of 249kg equalling to first gold medallist winner Muhammad Izhar Ahmed from Malaysia, who is three-time medallist in the commonwealth championship while third position was bagged by Lakmal Chaturanga from Sri Lanka.
Gururaj, son of a truck driver Mahabala Poojary is serving in Indian Air Force. He had dreamt of becoming a wrestler since his schooling days, his teachers had then motivated his interest due to which he had emerged as National Champion twice while he was training at SDM Sports Training Institute. He had also won gold medals at Asian Games and South Asian Games.
