KSRTC launches UPI payment option for cashless bus ticketing

Bengaluru, Nov 12: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has introduced cashless ticketing across its fleet, with the launch of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) as a payment option. This move, aimed at addressing long-standing passenger concerns, will simplify daily commutes by eliminating the need for cash and resolving common issues with exact change that often lead to disputes between passengers and conductors.

10,000 Smart ETMs deployed

As part of the initiative, KSRTC has equipped its buses with 10,000 advanced Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETMs), supporting a range of payment options, including UPI, debit cards, and credit cards. These smart ETMs are already in operation across the corporation’s fleet of 8,800 buses, and further expansion is planned as conductors undergo training to operate the new system.

Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy lauded the move, saying, “This cashless payment system addresses the recurring issue of passengers not having the exact change, making it more convenient for both passengers and conductors. With UPI, debit, and credit card payments now accepted, the entire ticketing process will be smoother and more efficient.”

The new ETMs will also be compatible with National Common Mobility Cards and KSRTC-issued bus passes, with this functionality set to roll out within a month.

Phased rollout and future plans

KSRTC Managing Director V Anbu Kumar explained that the corporation is upgrading its ticketing system with the deployment of 10,245 Android-based smart ETMs featuring touchscreens, wireless connectivity, and faster processing speeds. The new machines replace the traditional ETMs that have been in use for the past two decades. “These modern devices will not only enhance the passenger experience but also improve operational efficiency,” he said.

Following a successful pilot of a dynamic QR payment system, KSRTC plans to integrate this feature into all ETMs by the end of the month. This makes KSRTC the first transport corporation in Karnataka, and one of the first in India, to implement such advanced digital payment solutions.

Collaboration with EbixCash Ltd

The upgrade is being implemented in partnership with EbixCash Ltd, which has been contracted to develop and maintain an Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) for KSRTC.

As part of a five-year agreement, EbixCash will oversee the installation, operation, and maintenance of the new cashless ticketing system, as well as provide integrated digital payment solutions.

Looking ahead, KSRTC plans to deploy an additional 15,000 smart ETMs over the next five years as part of its vision to implement fully automated fare collection across its network.

This cashless ticketing initiative is expected to make travel more convenient for passengers and is a significant step in modernising public transport in Karnataka, ensuring smoother, faster, and more secure transactions.
