Hyderabad, March 16,2017: Telanganana Assembly but one with “100 % conviction” to extend quota to Muslims and STs.
CMs’ conference
The government will unite the people of the entire country on the issue and, if need be, organise a Chief Ministers conference. He will also lead a delegation of parties to the Prime Minister. The reservation for Muslims will not be given on religious but socio-economic basis, he added.
He justified quota for Muslims because rulers from the community ruled Telangana for 750 years, yet there were poor in it. He also justified classification of SCs for reservations.
Higher quota
Urging the Centre to recognise the sovereign right of the State governments to enact laws, he said Telangana must be given freedom to have reservations in excess of 50 % because the population of weaker sections in the State was 90.75 %. The reservations for BCs who constituted 50 % of weaker sections must also go up.
The BCs Commission which is touring the State to study the socio-economic backwardness of Muslims will submit its report in a couple of days.
Muslims will get all facilities on par with SCs and STs, he added.
Earlier, Leader of Opposition Mohammed Ali Shabbir said it was the stand of Congress that the government implement reservations for Muslims straight away after the legislation was passed like it happened in Tamil Nadu. Judicial review and Schedule IX issue can come later.
