Karwar: CBI Arrests Army Officer And His Associate For Accepting Bribe

New Delhi, July 27: An officer of the Indian Army and his associate were arrested by CBI on Thursday for accepting a bribe. Army officer- working as a Garrison Engineer and  Assistant of Garrison Engineer were apprehended in Karnataka while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 and 30 coins of gold. The incident of Karwar in the state of Karnataka came to light after a complaint was filed against them. They have now been booked under  Prevention of Corruption Act by the CBI. The officer of the Indian Army identified as  Lt. Col. J.S. Bath and RB Chawan- the Assistant Engineer were apprehended when they were taking a bribe for clearing pending bills of a civil contractor, said an official of the domestic security agency. A CBI official told IANS: ” In the complaint, it was penned that the two engineers allegedly demanded a sum of Rs 1.5 and 1 lakh from a civil contractor to clear his pending bills and for the payment already made.” He further stated that the amount was demanded in installments. ” At first, they demanded Rs 50,000 in the form of gold and cash. The Army officer was caught red handed while accepting 30 gold coins and Chawan was seen taking Rs 50,000 from the complainant. Searches by the CBI have also been conducted on the premises of Bath and Chawan.
