Karnataka, AP discuss Tungabhadra canal modernisation works

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has called on his Karnataka counterpart Siddaramaiah here on Monday and discussed issues related to modernisation of high and low level canals of Tungabhadra and sharing of river water. Mr. Naidu requested the Karnataka Government to spare 32 tmcft of water from the Tungabhadra canal for use by Andhra Pradesh since the state faces shortage of drinking water. A meeting chaired by Mr. Siddaramaiah was attended by ministers and officials from both states. Briefing presspersons after the meeting, Mr. Siddaramaiah said there was need to take canal modernisation works to ensure smooth flow of water to neighbouring state. The Tungabhadra Board would prepare the action plan for taking up works. Modernisation of canal works, including concrete lining, reconstruction of culverts, and other structures, helps to plug seepages and leakages and finally solve the perennial problem of “reduced inflows' reaching Andhra borders. There was huge loss of water in the canals at the Andhra Pradesh-Karnataka border due to seepage and leakage. Mr. Naidu thanked Mr. Siddaramaiah for responding positively to AP’s proposal for modernisation.
