IRB officials starts widening work of National highway which is limited to 30 meters; Protest called on 15 Feb, MLA Sunil Naik extends support

Bhatkal, Shirali 14 February 2019:(Bhatkallys News Bureau) Acting on the orders of District Commissioner(DC), IRB officials on Wednesday started the widening work of National highway which was limited to 30 meters amidst the protest from the locals and Gram Panchayat officials here at Shirali.
On Wednesday morning, as per the orders by the District Commissioner, the Engineers of IRB company started the widening of National Highway which was now limited to only 30 meters. Upon noticing this the Shirali Panchayat officials along with the locals gathered near the national highway and tried to restrict the road widening work of NH-66. Security was beefed up by Bhatkal DySP Valentine D’souza and Bhatkal CPI Ganesh KL, the IRB personnel continued the National Highway widening work.
Locals and officials of Shirali Panchayat staged Darna on the road and threatened to sleep before the IRB trucks if the widening works doesn’t stops there.
The officials of IRB tried to convince the officials and people that the orders were issued for 30 meters widening from the office of Deputy Commissioner and they had say in to the matter.
Bhatkal Assistant commissioner(AC) Sajjid Ahmed Mulla rushed to the spot and requested the protestors to let the IRB to complete excite their duty.
Upon noticing the protest was not yielding any result, the protesters then turned towards the house of Bhatkal MLA Sunil Naik, who was unavailable at his house. Panchayat President later elaborated the whole incident to the MLA through phone.
MLA Sunil Naik then called AC Sajjid Mulla and requested his intervention in the matter. But, the latter refused to stop the work as it was the order from DC’s office and allowed the IRB officers to continue the work.
Though MLA Sunil reached AC Sajjid over phone and discussed the issue, AC turned down his request and let the IRB continue their work.
Commenting on this regard Gram Panchayat President Venkatesh Naik said, “Though we had sent many petitions and memorandums to Taluk and District Administration to extend the widening of road to 45 meters, over request have been turned down by them. Condemning this, a mass protest will be organised here on 15th Feb at 8 am” .
MLA Sunil Naik also extending his support to the protest and in the press release sent by his personal assistant stated that, “There is a great need of widening the road to 45 meters as Shirali in further days has a great potential to get developed. Though for the past 6-7 months I have contacted the district in-charge minister, District Administration and all the responsible department, no desired response was sought by them. So, I extend my support to the protest on widening of the road, but, cannot take part due to budget session taking place at Bengaluru.”
