International Literacy Day celebrated in Bhatkal

Bhatkal: In an effort to promote reading and education, government officials here observed the International Literacy Day at the panchayat hall in Bhatkal on Monday. MLA of Bhatkal, Mr. Mankal Vaidya who was present at the occasion, gave beneficial talk related to the topic.
The initiatives in the field of education that are taking place nation-wide is bringing about decline in the rate of illiteracy in the country, he said.
In his key speech, taluka panchayat Head, Shanti Sukramane gave beneficial speech on the importance of education. Taluka panchayat Vice-President Jaya Lakshmi Naik, Tahsildar and others were present on the occasion.
September 8 was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. It was first celebrated in 1966. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.
