New Delhi: In a big retaliatory move against Pakistan in the wake of Pulwama terror attack, the Narendra Modi government on Thursday decided to stop its share of water which used to flow to Pakistan. Union minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Twitter that India will now divert water from its eastern rivers and supply it to the state of Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab. “Under the leadership of Hon'ble PM Sri @narendramodi ji, Our Govt. has decided to stop our share of water which used to flow to Pakistan. We will divert water from Eastern rivers and supply it to our people in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab. “The construction of dam has started at Shahpur- Kandi on Ravi river. Moreover, UJH project will store our share of water for use in J&K and the balance water will flow from 2nd Ravi-BEAS Link to provide water to other basin states. “All the above Projects are declared as the National projects (sic),” Gadkari tweeted. The minister had earlier in the day stated that India would divert water of three rivers, over which the country has complete rights under the Indus Water Treaty, to Yamuna river. The decision has come in the wake of anger in the country over the Pulwama terror attack. As per the bilateral Indus Water Treaty of 1960, India has complete rights over three common rivers, namely Ravi, Beas and Sutlej. Pakistan, on the other hand, has full rights over Jhelum, Chenab and Indus. “After partition, three rivers each were divided between India and Pakistan. The water of the three rivers over which India has rights was going to Pakistan. We have constructed projects after which the water of these rivers will be diverted to Yamuna river. Once this happens, there will be more water in Yamuna,” the minister had said during an event earlier today. In the evening, he confirmed that the decision has been taken. The pressure has been mounting on the government to strike back against Pakistan in the wake of the February 14 Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were martyred. The responsibility of the attack was claimed by Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Muhammed terror group. Source: Times Now
