India is all set to get a waiver from the punitive US law called Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) , which will allow New Delhi to ink the Rs 39,000 crore deal for five advanced S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems from Russia later this year without facing the threat of financial sanctions from Washington. The US Senate and House Armed Services Committee, in a joint conference report to the National Defense Authorisation Act-2019 in Washington on Monday, provided a modified waiver to section 231 of CAATSA. The final piece of legislation will exempt three countries, India, Indonesia and Vietnam, from the sanctions regime under CAATSA, which seeks to deter countries from buying Russian weapon systems or Iranian oil. It will require the Trump administration to certify whether the three countries can remain exempt from sanctions, said reports from Washington. Source: Times of India
