SHARJAH // A husband and wife team have been arrested for allegedly trying to sell drugs.

The Arab couple were tracked down after a tip-off to Sharjah Police, who said they were being assisted by an Arab man. Police said the trio were found with 600 illegal pills and 20gm of marijuana when they were arrested. During interrogations, the three confessed to possessing the drugs with the intent to distribute them to drug users in Sharjah, police said.
They have been referred to prosecutors to stand trial.
Col Mohammed Bayat, director of police operations in Sharjah, said parents and families should consider taking advantage of the amendments to the federal law regarding drug use. "Parents should hand over their children who are using drugs or suspected of using them to the narcotics department to refer them to medical facilities to stop their addiction," he said.
Drug users that are handed into authorities by families are no longer eligible for custodial sentences under the recently revised law.
