Heavy rains lash Bhatkal; officials swing into action as bridge collapses near Shirali

Shirali 09 June 2018: The temporary bridge that was constructed for commutation of residents of Alvekodi, while the main existing bridge went under renovation washed away due to heavy rainfall on Thursday night here at Tattihakkal of Shirali.
The bridge which connected Alvekodi, with Shirali, was sanctioned for a renovation a few months back and subsequently a temporary bridge beside the existing one was built for the commutation of the residents, however as the rain has battered the Bhatkal Taluka over the last three days the temporary bridge washed away due to the flood in the river, temporarily disconnecting the residents with the access to the other side of the river where they have to commute for their basic needs like household shopping, schools, medicals etc.
Bhatkal MLA Sunil Naik also reached the spot on Friday morning to inspect the situation and instructed the concerned to make immediate arrangements to connect with the other side following which temporary arrangements have been put in place for the convenience of the people.
A team of APCR (Association of Protection of Civil Rights) also visited the spot on Saturday afternoon and took stock of the condition and also interacted with the residents.
Bhatkal in last couple of days Bhatkal Taluka has seen excessive downpour with and reports of damages and injuries due to lightening have been reported from various place in the Taluka.
Bhatkal has recorded the rainfall of 75.4mm on 7th and 8th of June. Overall the Bhatkal taluk has recorded 449.9mm of rainfall till now. comparing the previous year's record, there has been a increase of 127.3mm rain in the taluk.
