FIR against West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee for remarks against draft Assam NRC

On Tuesday, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BYJM), the youth wing of BJP has filed an FIR in Naharkatia police station at Assam's Dibrugarh, after the Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister reportedly remarked that expanding the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in her state would lead to civil war and bloodbath. As per a report by The Telegraph, an Assam cop said that the complaint would be referred to their Guwahati headquarters. Mamata, while speaking at an event in New Delhi yesterday, said, “What happened in Jharkhand (child trafficking involving Missionaries of Charities), incidents of lynching, atrocities against Dalits and Muslims… we don’t support this. If it goes on like this, don’t you think it will create a civil war and lead to bloodbath?” Questioning BJP's 'audacity' to implement NRC next in Bengal, the TMC chief said that the saffron party can’t decide on someone's Indian identity. She also warned that BJP's attempt to divide the country won't be tolerated. All citizens are entitled to stay in their country. Something dangerous happened in Jharkhand may happen in Bihar, UP, Rajasthan, Haryana Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand (BJP-ruled states)... but we won’t let this happen in West Bengal. It won’t happen in Karnataka or Andhra Pradesh either,” she said. "The NRC is being done with a political motive. We will not let this happen. They (BJP) are trying to divide the people. The situation cannot be tolerated. There will be a civil war, bloodbath in the country," Banerjee added. The remarks attracted a sharp criticism from the BJP camp, as the party chief Amit Shah, while addressing a press conference yesterday from the saffron party's New Delhi headquarters, attacked Banerjee, saying that she had developed a habit of speaking and doing things which only have vote bank implication. "Mamataji sees nothing other than vote bank everyone has their own prism, we see the national interest and she is looking at other things," Shah said in reference to the TMC supremo, who is camping in Delhi and has sought an appointment with Home Minister Rajnath Singh on NRC issue. The massive Supreme Court-monitored exercise to identify genuine Indian nationals living in Assam excluded over 40 lakh people from the final draft list. The issue rocked both house of Parliament after which Home Minister Rajnath Singh appealed to the opposition not to politicise the sensitive matter as the list has been published on the directives of the Supreme Court and the Centre has no role in it.
