The outburst of sentiments among the Indian community in the UAE, following the gang rape and death of a Delhi paramedical student, has reached the Indian government. The Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi said it has conveyed the sentiments of the country’s Indian community to the government of India.
“The embassy of India in the UAE is deeply shocked at the unfortunate Delhi gang rape incident on December 16 that led to the tragic death of the victim on December 29, 2012. This incident has deeply shocked the government and the people of India,” the mission said in a media statement. It said that the embassy joins the Indian community in the UAE in conveying its deepest condolences to the family and relatives of the victim. The mission pointed out that the Indian government has already initiated measures to examine existing penal provisions related to the sexual assault crimes, and measures to enhance the safety and security of women. Briefing the community about the government’s response, the mission said a judicial committee was appointed on December 22, 2012 by the government of India which is to submit its report within 30 days to suggest amendments to criminal law to stringently deal with sexual assault cases. “A one-person commission of inquiry, headed by a former Delhi High Court Judge was set up on December 26, 2012 to identify the lapses and determine accountability in this incident. The Delhi High Court also approved the creation of five fast-track courts to try rape and sexual assault cases. All the accused in this case have been arrested. The Indian judiciary has assured speedy trial and delivery of justice in this case,” the embassy stated.
