Endosulfan effect seen in Bhatkal's Belke region; several disabled

Bhatkal - 4 May, 2011: Endosulfan, an off-patent organochlorine insecticide which is used to save crops from insects is showing its bad effect here at Bhatkal's Belke area. This colourless solid has emerged as a highly controversial agrichemicaldue to its acutetoxicity, potential forbioaccumulation, and role as anendocrine disruptor.

Several people under the age group of 15-25 years have developed different disorders believed to be from its bad effects. It may be noted that, several states including Kerala have banned this chemical while people of Udupi and Mangalore have recently held protest demanding complete ban on endosulfan in Karnataka.

According to Govt sources, this chemical is not used since from 15 years.

Meanwhile, affected persons had demanded compensation from the Govt.
