Emirati, expat jailed in UAE for promoting terror groups, fake news

A court in UAE has jailed two men for cyber crimes, Wam reported on Wednesday. Abu Dhabi appeal court sentenced a 45-year-old Emirati man to 10 years - identified as H.A.A.T - in prison for creating fake social media accounts to promote false news and videos. The man posted false news and videos on fake accounts he created on Facebook and Twitter, in turn harming the country's national interests, security and negatively affecting the society. His acts violated Federal Law number 5 of year 2012 - regarding combating cyber-crimes. All of the electronic equipment used was seized by the court, including his smart phone and laptop. Additionally, the State Security Department of the Supreme Federal court had sentenced a 22-year-old man from Comoros Islands - identified as A.A.A.M.B - to 5 years imprisonment and Dh1 million fine. The court found him guilty of belonging to Daesh as he confessed his affiliation to Daesh on his Twitter account. He was also accused of spreading false news and promoting terror groups, including Al Qaeda and Daesh, on social media through their literature and terror objectives. They seized all of his electronic equipment as well. His website was also shut down, as per the court ruling. Source: Khaleej Times
