RTA move technical testing and insurance services to ease weekday rush

Dubai: Vehicle testing and insurance services in Dubai will be open on Fridays.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) move is aimed at easing the weekday rush at vehicle testing centres that also offer registration and insurance facilities. Since the end of 2012, more than 1.13 million vehicle are registered in Dubai. An average of 3,500 vehicles undergo technical testing daily for renewal of registration.
The service, already operational, will help motorists who are unable to get their vehicles tested and registered on weekdays.
RTA’s testing service providers Tasjeel, Shamil, Tamam Al Ghandi, Al Shirawi, Cars, and Al-Mumayaz, will offer the service on rotational basis, with each firm working on all Fridays of a particular month.
“We are doing this to ease rush on weekdays and to offer convenience to motorists. Each service provider contracted with RTA will provide service on all Fridays of a month following which another firm do the job,” said Mohammed Abdul Karim Nimaat, Director of Vehicles Licensing Services, RTA Licensing Agency.
However, the registration counters will not remain open on Fridays as RTA aims to encourage motorists to use online and call centre channels for registration
“Our idea is to get more and more people to use online and call centre services. Motorists can get their vehicles tested and insurance done any day including Friday, following which they can get the vehicles registered online, which is more convenient,” added Nimaat.
He informed that people can find out from RTA call centre (8009090) about which service stations are working for a particular Friday.
This month, the Friday service will be available at Tamam Al Ghandi in Ras Al Khor. The service will be open between 4pm and 9pm.
This month the service is open for both light an heavy vehicles, however, that won’t be the case always.
“The Friday service is mainly for light vehicles but if a service provider decides to keep a centre open that has both facilities then it will be good,” said Naeemat.
Annual technical tests of vehicles are mandatory, which look into safety of vehicles on a broad perspective.
Some of the key parameters that are currently looked into are vehicle identification numbers, brake system, steering and suspension, wheel and tyres, body condition, lighting, engine compartment etc.
RTA is planning to introduce broader parameters of testing from mid this year, with most of the work to be done newly installed equipment.
According to RTA rules, every vehicle needs to pass the technical test before it is insured, following which the registration is renewed.
More than a million vehicles are registered in Dubai.
