Bhatkal, April 22, 2025: A compilation of poems by renowned Urdu poet Syed Ashraf Barmawar was formally released at a literary event held at Ameena Palace in Bhatkal on Sunday. The event was jointly organised by the Bhatkal unit of Idara Adab-e-Islami Hind and Mehfil-e-Sher-o-Adab to honour the literary contributions of the late poet.
The collection, compiled and edited by noted writer Dr. Mohammed Haneef Shabab in coordination with Syed Ashraf Barmawar’s family, was released in the presence of several literary and community figures.
Chief Guest Maulana Ilyas Jakati, while addressing the gathering, spoke in detail about the poet’s calm demeanour and reflective nature. “Ashraf Barmawar was someone who faced life’s challenges with patience and grace, never losing composure,” he said, praising both the literary and personal aspects of Barmawar’s life.
Former President of Majlis-e-Islah wa Tanzeem and Ashraf’s brother, Syed Mohiddin Barmawar, also spoke at the event, sharing memories of his late brother's conduct within the family and his interest in Urdu poetry. He recited a few select verses from the newly published collection.
Dr. Haneef Shabab, a close friend of the poet and editor of the collection, recalled the process of compiling the work. “I had urged Ashraf sahab several times to bring out a book of his poetry, but he was hesitant. Eventually, he agreed, and we held several meetings to finalise the content. Unfortunately, he passed away before we could complete it,” Dr. Shabab said.
To mark the occasion, a Mushaira (poetry session) was also held featuring prominent poets including Kokab Zaki from Hyderabad and Ibrahim Nafees from Bengaluru. Several local poets—such as Dr. Haneef Shabab, Syed Salik Nadvi, Iqbal Sayeedi, and Abdul Aleem Shaheen—also recited their works.
Syed Ashraf Barmawar, who passed away in 2018, was known not only for his literary talent but also as one of the founders of Idara Tarbiyat-e-Ikhwan in Bhatkal. His poetry, often reflects themes of social introspection and human values.
