CJI refuses urgent listing of pleas against Hijab Ban in classrooms

New Delhi: On Thursday, the Chief Justice of India refused to accept a request for urgent listing of the petitions challenging the Karnataka High Court Judgment which ruled Hijab is not an essential religious practice of Islam and upheld the ban on wearing headscarves in classrooms. According to the report by the Live Law, Senior Advocate Devadatt Kamat mentioned the matter before the Chief Justice of India seeking an urgent listing in the wake of the ongoing exams in Karnataka. However, CJI Ramana said, “Exams have nothing to do with the issue". While being intervened by the Solicitor General in this regard that the issue was being repeatedly brought up, The CJI said, “Mr.SG can you wait. Don't sensitise the issue”, it is learned. Amid this Advocate, Kamat reiterated and said, "These are girls...the exams are from 28th. They are being restrained from entering the schools. One year will go", he pressed. But the CJI did not respond to this and called for "Next item", without indicating any date, Live Law reported. On 16th March, the Supreme Court had said that it will list the case after the Holi vacations, when urgent listing of the petitions was sought by petitions was sought by petitioners on the ground of upcoming exams.
