The accident involving schoolchildren at Deve Gowda Circle here on Tuesday has put the focus on the poor traffic management system at the junction of Outer Ring Road and Bannur Road.

Irate members of the public, who rushed to rescue the children in the van, complained about the poor traffic management and indiscipline among road users at the junction. They said there was no traffic signal or scientific road humps at the junction. They also expressed concern over the increasing traffic density on the narrow Bannur Road on which several educational institutions, including Vidya Vikas institutions, Navkis, and Delhi Public School, are situated.

N. Rudramani, DCP (Traffic and Crime), who was out of station on Tuesday, said he would visit the accident spot on Wednesday and take steps like assigning traffic personnel.

On Tuesday morning, the van driver, after picking up five students from villages near Srirangapatna and two from an apartment in Nazarbad, drove rashly and collided with a rice-laden truck on Bannur Road, the police said.

Though the irate public tried to assault the truck driver, the Siddharthanagar traffic police have registered a case against the van driver, who also suffered injuries in the accident. “The truck driver was not at fault,” a traffic police officer said. However, both vehicles have been seized.

Meanwhile, Srinath, father of Shashira, a student who was injured in the accident, said the van driver was usually a responsible person who took good care of the children.
