Citizens also to blame for bad state of roads: HC

Observing that careless acts of citizens is also a cause for bad state of roads, the Karnataka High Court on Wednesday said that it is the duty of the BBMP to fill up potholes that crop up regularly due to various reasons. Proceedings dropped A Division Bench comprising Justice N. Kumar and Justice B. Sreenivase Gowda made these observations while dropping contempt of court proceedings initiated against the Chief Secretary and the BBMP Commissioner. The proceedings were initiated on a petition filed by advocate K.N. Subba Reddy alleging that the BBMP had failed to maintain roads as per the recommendations of a court-appointed expert committee. “No doubt the corporation has to see that there are no potholes so that traffic is not hampered and accidents do not take place on account of the same. At the same time, potholes cannot be completely prevented due to wear and tear, and the careless acts of citizens,” the Bench said. The Bench expressed satisfaction with the actions initiated till now by the BBMP on attending to the deficiencies in implementing the committee’s recommendations.
