CBI’s Devender Kumar, arrested in Rakesh Asthana bribery case, gets bail

Devender Kumar, the CBI officer arrested in the corruption case against the agency’s special director Rakesh Asthana, was granted bail by a Delhi court on Wednesday. The court order came after the CBI lawyer did not oppose release on bail but only asked that “strict conditions” be imposed for his release. The CBI officer’s lawyer told Special CBI Judge Santosh Snehi Mann that the CBI had violated every rule in this case and the irony is that the only person who followed the rulebook, Devender Kumar, was in jail. For one, he said that CBI officers did not have a valid warrant when they raided his house. Later, Kumar alleged, the CBI seized 8 mobile phones and other gadgets, some of them without a receipt. Judge Mann has ordered Devender Kumar’s release on a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and one surety of the like amount. Kumar, who was arrested last week in connection with bribery allegations, and Asthana have already challenged the FIR filed against them. While the CBI had earlier told the court that Kumar had tried to fabricate evidence during the investigation in another case, Kumar had claimed that he was falsely implicated in the case and was a victim of rivalry among the senior officers of the central probe agency.
