The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Thursday, filed status report in a sealed cover explaining the requirement of services of IPS officer Satish Verma in Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case. A hearing on the report will take place on Friday.
Earlier on December 10, a bench of the Gujarat high court comprising justices Jayant Patel and Abhilasha Kumari asked the CBI to explain why they need Verma’s services for investigation in Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case.
The bench was hearing an application moved by CBI seeking six months’ extension of service of the senior cop who had become instrumental in revealing the fact behind the controversial encounter case.
Earlier in July, the bench had asked the government to relieve Verma for investigation in the case. However, Sharma could not participate in the probe as he fractured his leg and was not keeping well. Now CBI is seeking more time.
Sharma was the member of the Gujarat high court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) that concluded that Ishrat encounter was not genuine. The high court had then handed over investigation to the CBI. Ishrat and three others were gunned down by the trigger-happy cops of the Detection of Crime Branch in 2003. They had claimed that the four were on mission to eliminate chief minister Modi.
