Bangalore: Former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa remained inscrutable as news of the Supreme Court granting her bail was given to her within minutes of the verdict on Friday forenoon, sources privy to the happenings in Central Jail, Parappana Agrahara, said.
"Jayalalithaa remained cool and calm as officials told her bail had been granted to her and her three fellow convicts in the disproportionate assets case. But her associates Sasikala Natarajan and J Ilavarasi could not hide their elation," sources told TOI. The fourth convict, Jaya's one-time foster son VN Sudhakaran, though, soon appeared uneasy and had to be rushed to the jail hospital for a medical check-up. The convicts immediately began preparing to leave, hoping the SC order would take effect at least by evening. Sasikala and Ilavarasi packed their leader's belongings and their own. The trio decided to leave behind some towels, saris and bedspreads they had acquired for their use, sources said. Three advocates representing the quartet arrived at the jail's admission room where formalities of admission and release are conducted. Sasikala and Sudhakaran walked up to the admission room and had a chat with the lawyers. The AIADMK leader reportedly told jail officials to ensure that only her lawyers were present in the admission room when she walks out of prison. As dusk set in, and it became clear they would have to spend another night in the prison, the quartet didn't show any signs of displeasure, sources said.   -TOI
