Book on Jukaku Shamsuddin a brilliant work

The book titled, JH Shamsuddin - Service above Self, published by Majlse Islah Wa Tanzeem, Bhatkal and authored by community's finest jounalist, Aftab Husain Kola gives a profile of the great man and chronicles his achievements and who distinguished himself in varied spheres and left a glorious trail of peerless service. With a beautiful high quality printing the book with admirable language makes for an interesting reading. Our younger generation are not aware of Jukaku's services and the book makes an marvellous effort to highlight the selfless services of Jukaku Shamsuddin who was born in Bhatkal in the year 1912. The auAftab Kolathor Aftab Kola writes in the foreword, "Shamsuddin was a great institution-builder with a visionary zeal, which made him one of the few leaders in the state who attracted admirers of different political hues." After few years of study in Anjuman and later doing schooling in Gibb School, Kumta, Shamsuddin took his BA (Hons) degree in economics from Karnatak Arts College, Dharwad in 1933. He proceeded further to acquire an LLB degree from Sykes college of law (later renamed as Shahaji Law College), Kolhapur, affiliated to Bombay University in 1935. After he became a lawyer, the book states, "Several of these cases were fought for without any fee or just for a nominal one. He was soon appointed as the Public Prosecutor." The author, a top class journalist, has come out with a brilliant account of Shamsuddin's political career. Aftab Kola spent a few days studying the debates at the Karnataka Archives, Vidhana Soudha, Bangalore to dig out information. Anjuman_Administrative_Building_44 Giving a detailed account of his social and political life, the book says that Shamsuddin was an active social worker. Shamsuddin first joined the Muslim League which was the drawing force for Muslims in the pre-Independence era. Shamsuddin’s initial entry into politics was through the local body. He served as president of the Bhatkal Municipality from 1954 to 1958. In this period, several kutcha roads in the town were metalled and the town got its storm-water drainage system. Shamsuddin first entered Assembly of the Bombay Presidency in 1946 and then was twice (1957 and 1962) elected as MLA representing Honnavar constituency (Bhatkal was then part of Honnavar Assembly constituency). Within less than a year of becoming an MLA, Shamsuddin was taken in as deputy minister for Finance in the B. D. Jatti ministry in 1958. There are separate chapters on Shamsuddin as deputy finance minister and as electricity minister giving an account of his achievements. Recalling Shamsuddin's association with Moulana Qari Mohammed Tayyab, the illustrious scholar, the book says, " It had a deep influence on Shamsuddin’s life. When the Moulana QariTayyab visited Bhatkal in 1952 in connection with a historic function of the Anjuman Hami-e-Muslimeen, Bhatkal Shamsuddin took him around the town and spent considerable amount of time with him. Shamsuddin was thus in the forefront whenever any religious event was organised in the town." After completing LLB in 1935 Shamsuddin began practising law in Bhatkal. He had already been engaged in social work as a student. And given his abilities and being well educated, Shamsuddin made an instant mark in social work and that led to his entry into Majlis Islah wa Tanzeem. Be it Tanzeem's relief work, organising Seerat functions, or upgrading the Ismail Hasan Siddique Free library, he was always in the forefront. He was president of Tanzeem for three terms. He served general secretary of Anjuman for two decades and played a key role in Jamatul Muslimeen's activities. Aseparate chapter on Shamsuddin and Bhatkal is also included. Shamsuddin brought electricity to Bhatkal and many parts of Uttara Kannada district. With the financial patronage of Khan Bahadur SM Syed Abubaker Moulana, Shamsuddin played a key role in setting up the Cottage Hospital (now known as the Government General Hospital. Shamsuddin was also responsible in bringing telephone lines to Bhatkal. The road to Sagar via Jog Falls that used to be unmotorable during the monsoon was metalled under the Shamsuddin’s instruction. And soon Bhatkal town’s municipal limits, including Navayath Colony, were also extended. Electric Street lights too were introduced in the town during this period. The Venktapur bridge connecting Bhatkal and Shirali and the Kadavinkatta Barrage (dam) was also sanctioned during Shamsuddin's ministership. To pay homage to this great son of the soil, the people of Bhatkal have named an important junction after him. The Shamsuddin Circle is now the heart of Bhatkal. A road in Navayath Colony has also been named after him. A few decades ago, the Bhatkal Muslim Jamat, Bangalore constructed a building in Bangalore dedicated to his memory. Being a devout Muslim who never missed a prayer even while a minister. Official duties would not deflect him from the religious obligations of prayers or fasting. There is a chapter on Shamsudin - The Man written by Mariam Tayyeb Jukaku, Shamsuddin's grand-daughter based in the US. A segment on Tributes heaps praises on the qualities and achievements of Shamsuddin by several politicians and others including late S. Nijalingappa, Chief Minister of Karnataka. Priced at Rs.200 and printed ensuring high quality, the book carries more than 20 valuable photographs. The author has done a remarkable work with an admirable writing style and facts. The book should serve as a source of inspiration to the younger generation. Shamsuddin died on March 27,1964 and left behind his wife, six daughters and four sons. All of them are well settled, some in India, and others in the Middle East, Europe and the United States. Mr Abdul Rahim Jukaku, the present presiudent of Anjuman, is his eldest son. Mohiddin Altaf Kharoori, the general secretary of Tanzeem, aptly sums in the foreword of the book, "It is hoped that the initiative will be appreciated and the community youth draw inspiration from the life of Janab Shamsuddin Saheb and imbibe the ideals cherished by him."
