Bhatkal 01 May 2018: (Bhatkallys News Bureau) Only three years after the construction of concrete road at Azad Nagar, right outside Anjuman Azad school has caved in a dangerous pothole, which is now concerning residents who are afraid it can be a reason for road mishaps if not repaired immediately. A team of Bhatkallys.com after receiving complaints from residents of the area visited the spot and found the pothole to be actually dangerous for bike riders especially during nights and for kids since it is a residential area. The local residents complained of ignorance by the Jali Patan Panchayath officials and claimed that even after over a month of complaining of the pothole, the administration is yet to initiate any action on the complaint. Anees Momin, whose residence falls exactly in front of the pothole said "We are really concerned about our kids who play outside the home in the evening, we complained about it to our ward councilor, he assured of repairing it, and one month later you can still see there is no action yet, moreover there are no streetlights here, so it is more difficult for people who commute on this road during night". "In last few days three incidents have took place wherein three vehicles have fallen into the pothole, but no major injury was reported, but if it is left open, anything can happen, the administration should do something before its too late". Anees added. Interestingly the Panchayath member of the ward is the Jali Patan Panchayath's President Abdul Rahim himself. When contacted by Bhatkallys.com, Abdul Rahim blamed election code of conduct which was enforced on 27 March ahead of the assembly elections in the state, for the repair work to be in pending state. Abdul Rahim added "Yes, I received the complaint one month back and I had immediately completed formalities for the paper work and a sanction of Rs. 2 Lakh was granted, but then the election Code of Conduct came into force and all the government projects were haulted, we cannot do anything about it till the assembly elections are done with". He further said "It is the right of people to raise their voice against such things, and I appreciate when people do that, but we as councilors are currently unable to do anything, we are bound by code of conduct, but as soon as elections are over I will make sure it is repaired on priority". It will be interesting to see if the Panchayath officials can arrange a temporary solution to the pothole before it results in more mishaps. Meanwhile the locals have themselves lodged a concrete brick onto the pothole but it is only good during day time to signal people about the pothole, but during night it increases the threat of mishaps due to its height and shape.
