Bhatkal 16 July 2018: (Bhatkallys News Bureau) Nearly nine months after Bhatkallys.com first reported the Garbage and dump yard issue in Heble Panchayath limits nothing much has been done to come up with temporary solution let alone a permanent one. Residents of places like Meena road, Kadi machine etc have been living in the midst of diseases spreading mosquitoes and the polluted air mainly due to the perishable garbage that is thrown on the roads. The residents then (in October 2017, when we first reported the issue) had complained about the health problems the kids in the locality are facing which also include frequent illness, an claim that should've drawn immediate attention of the administration and authorities, but sadly it hasn't. Fast forward to July 2018, the condition remains the same and so does the excuse of the Panchayath authorities of not having a appropriate dump yard, but what has changed is the Assistant Commissioner of Bhatkal sub-division. Bhatkallys.com on Monday, contacted the new Assistant Commissioner of Bhatkal Siraj Ahmed Mulla and shared ideas about probable solutions and requested his immediate intervention into the issue in the best of interest of the local residents and their health. Speaking to Bhatkallys.com Mulla assured of him holding a meeting in a couple of days for with the Panchayath authorities and coming out with appropriate solution. Bhatkallys.com also spoke to Panchayath Councillor Syed Ali Maliki, who agreed to the fact that the issue is turning for worst everyday and that immediate attention is required from the office of Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner while adding that the Panchayath at the ground level is doing what it can do. "We have done everything, from complaining to the Deputy Commissioner to holding meetings with TMC officials, and we are still trying to figure out what we can do in the absence of a designated dump yard for the Panchayath, the DC office should immediately reply to our complaints and letters as well as to those written by the residents themselves, the delay is from the DC office" Syed Ali added. Panchayath President ND Moger responded with a rather irresponsible comment when contacted, when asked what are the measures taken by the Panchayath for the awareness of people and to stop them from throwing the garbage on road as not even one signboard instructing people not to throw garbage were seen when Bhatkallys.com team visited the affected areas, Moger added "How can we go and teach people not to throw garbage here, we have so many other works to do and not just this garbage issue, we are doing what we can do and are writing to DC regularly about it, you can't expect us to go down there and do everything, people should be more responsible" Syed Ali also added that most of the garbage is thrown by the non-residents. "If we clean the area and strictly monitor the place, they will find another place to throw the garbage as it has happened previously. There should be a permanent solution, and right now the permanent solution is sanctioning of a dump yard to the Panchayath". The residents of the localities are being affected in the middle of these blame games, and some irresponsible acts of a few irresponsible citizens, and as claimed it has already started to take toll on their and their kids' health, it is high time for authorities to act immediately on this and for the citizens to be more responsible.
