Bhatkal, July 8: (Bhatkallys News Bureau) More than 15 people, including children and elderly individuals, have been injured in a series of stray dog attacks in Bhatkal town over the past 70 hours, according to health officials. While no deaths have been reported, the sudden rise in incidents has raised serious concerns among local residents.

The attacks, which began on July 6, have mostly occurred in residential areas and busy marketplaces. Health officials confirmed that all the injured victims have received treatment at local hospitals, with several being administered anti-rabies vaccines as a precautionary measure.

Authorities said that the injured include a high number of minors and senior citizens who were attacked while walking in their neighbourhoods. Residents have alleged that their previous complaints regarding the increasing stray dog population were ignored by municipal authorities.

"We have been reporting the problem for months, but no concrete action was taken. Now, people are afraid to step out even during the day," said a local resident from Sultan Street.

Responding to the rising panic, officials from Bhatkal Municipality stated that they are monitoring the situation closely and will soon initiate a sterilisation and rescue drive to control the stray dog population. The Animal Husbandry Department is also expected to join the effort, particularly in identifying and isolating dogs that display aggressive behaviour.

In light of fears related to rabies transmission, public health officials have been asked to remain on high alert.

A statement issued by the municipal administration said that a review meeting will likely be held early next week to address the growing public concerns and to chalk out an effective action plan to prevent further incidents.
