Bhatkallys News Bureau/ I. Zaorez Shabab Bhatkal, 14 Oct 2017: A blame game of words and empty promises has left locals in Bhatkal with a piling garbage issue. Speaking with Bhatkallys.com, a senior official from Bhatkal Heble Panchayath assured issues faced by locals in Bhatkal would be resolved in 20 days as new dumping yards are being sanctioned. Aftab Damudi, a councilor with Jali Pattan Panchayath, raised the issue of open garbage dump yards outside two schools in the Firdous nagar locality of Bhatkal. Civic officials from the Heble Panchayath responded saying the issue was already under discussion and approvals are awaited to develop a garbage disposal and noted the issue was already being discussed in meetings. N.D. Moger, President of Heble Panchayath highlighted his helplessness as he explained the sanctioning required the approval of deputy commissioner, S.S. Nakul. On being questioned on why the Panchayath failed to draw-up a solution in partnership with Town Municipal Corporation as a temporary measure, N. D Moger said, “Recent government sanctions require us to separate dry waste and wet waste. We do not have the manpower or infrastructure to provide such facilities and provide a door-to-door collection service in the locality.” The issue calls for immediate attention from higher authorities at the district level as open garbage dump yards pose a severe health risk to school children.
