Bhatkal: 'Government officials will visit your homes and check your bodies to detect Leprosy symptoms': Taluka Health Officer

Bhatkallys News Bureau/ Rizwan Gangavali Bhatkal 13 Oct 2017: In an attempt to eradicate diseases like Leprosy and Contractures Taluka Health administration will initiate a 14 days campaign between 23 Oct 2017 to 06 November 2017 in Bhatkal, informed the Taluka Health officer (THO) Murthy Raj Bhat in a meeting at the Tahsildar office on Thursday. THO further informed, 'a team of medical officials will visit every home in the town and look for Leprosy and Contractures symptoms on bodies of everyone and will be mandatory for everyone', while adding female staffs will inspect the ladies. THO also requested socio-political organizations like Majlis-e-Islah wa Tanzeem and Rabita society to volunteer in the campaign and requested them to provide their volunteers in the campaign who can visit homes and check the bodies for symptoms. While explaining the consequences of Leprosy and Contractures if not treated at the early stage, THO informed the impact of the disease will always occur at least twenty years after the symptoms show up on the body. contracture is a permanent shortening of a muscle or joint. It is usually in response to prolonged hypertonic spasticity in a concentrated muscle area, such as is seen in the tightest muscles of people with conditions like spastic cerebral palsy. Leprosy is a contagious disease that affects the skin, mucous membranes, and nerves, causing discoloration and lumps on the skin and, in severe cases, disfigurement and deformities. Leprosy is now mainly confined to tropical Africa and Asia. TMC officials along with Tanzeem officials, Rabita society members and other social workers were present at the meeting at the Tahsildar's office.
