Bengaluru witnesses the first successful pancreas-kidney transplant in Karnataka

BENGALURU: The city has seen the first successful simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplant in the state on 23-year-old Shakeer D, a resident of Bengaluru.
Shakeer, who had been suffering from Type 1 Diabetes since the age of 12 years received the organ five weeks back from a deceased donor.
The recipient's family was constantly on edge, having to manage his sugar levels and be prepared for sudden admissions due to infections till the transplant was a success.
Dr Anil Kumar, a nephrologist at BGS Global Hospitals, who was treating Shakeer, said: "His blood sugar control was very erratic and frequent trips for dialysis and a repeated admission meant be was unable to work. Post transplant he is doing well and his family is overjoyed to see him lead a normal life again."
