BENGALURU: While as the cybercrime department has been spreading awareness about fake employment offers on online portals, a firm in Koramangala has been accused of defrauding people by promising them lucrative jobs.
Debashis Roy, the owner of an IT company called Merger Technology, was caught by the Koramangala police on Wednesday. Debashis allegedly operated under the alias Akhil and took in applications of around 50 engineering graduates, collecting Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh from each fresher after promising to provide them jobs. Fake offer letters were apparently given to the graduates in order to convince them into giving the money.
The company, which was started in February last year on 80 Feet Road in Koramangala, was shut down last month. Kumaraswamy AC, president of the Information Technology Employees Union, filed a complaint with the Koramangala Police, requesting immediate action to be taken against Debashis, who is a resident of KR Puram. “There is a group of people in the scam such as his mother, wife, brother and an HR manager,” the complaint said.
“The alleged culprit was doing this to loot money from freshers. We are yet to get further details from him. He is in the lockup as of now,” a police official from Koramangala police station told The New Indian Express.
Debashis has been allegedly duping people even in other cities such as Chennai, Hyderabad and Delhi, using multiple fake voter ID cards and Aadhaar cards.“We found that this Merger Technology existed in Noida and attached the company’s particulars,” said Kumaraswamy. The complaint carries names of 47 victims, along with the money that was allegedly swindled by the company.
