The State Government has welcomed the Supreme Court’s verdict on postponing elections to Bruhat Bangalore Mahangara Palike (BBMP) by two months. The Government would study the Apex Court order and make an attempt to hold elections after restructuring the present City Corporation, Law Minister T.B. Jayachandra said here. “I welcome the verdict,” Mr. Jayachandra said. The government filed an appeal in the Supreme Court on Monday last, against the High Court single judgment on BBMP elections. The Government has planned to hold elections after delimitation of wards and reservation as per the 2011 Census. The BJP said that the ruling Congress feared to face elections and appealed to the Supreme Court to postpone polls citing 2011 census. The Government speak in volumes about devolution of powers to local bodies but take no action to hold elections, they alleged. A few days ago, the State Election Commission announced a calendar of events to hold polls to BBMP on July 28. -The Hindu
