Bhatkal: Road accidents continue unabated on National Highway 66 passing through Bhatkal, with yet another fatal mishap reported on the Bhatkal–Bengre stretch late Friday night, claiming the life of a young man and leaving three others injured.

The accident occurred within the limits of the Murdeshwar Police Station when two motorcycles collided with each other near the Mavinkatta–Kokti Cross in Bengre.

According to sources, Nagaraj Naik (30), a resident of Bengre, suffered critical injuries in the collision. He was initially taken to the Bhatkal Government Hospital and later referred to Manipal for advanced treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.

Police said Sachin Muruga was riding his motorcycle from Bhatkal towards Murdeshwar when it collided with another motorcycle ridden by Nagaraj near the crossing. Manjunath Masti Naik (26), who was travelling as a pillion rider on Nagaraj’s motorcycle, sustained injuries to his mouth, hands and legs.

Sachin Muruga and Madan, who were on the other motorcycle, also suffered injuries in the accident and are undergoing treatment.

Murdeshwar Police have registered a case in connection with the incident and are carrying out further investigation.

Local residents have expressed concern over the rising number of accidents on this stretch of National Highway 66, particularly near junctions and crossings. They pointed out that high-speed vehicles on the highway colliding with vehicles entering suddenly from cross roads have been a recurring cause of serious accidents in the area.
