17 year old held for hacking the UPSC website on September 11 - report

New Delhi: On September 10 the UPSC;s website was hacked - albeit for a few hours and then quickly restored - but hacked none the less. And the culprit has now been apprehended. The mastermind and the hacker, it is now known, is a 17 year old teenages. The 17-year-old teenage boy, accused of hacking Union Public Service Commission, UPSC’s website has been reportedly arrested by Delhi Police Special Cell.

The website was hacked on September 10, 2018. However, the incident came to light only when students took to twitter to share the screenshots of the hacked website. The hacked website displayed an image of a heart and cartoon character, Doraemon with the caption- 'Doraemon!!!! Pick up the call' and 'I m stewpeed' written on the image of the homepage. A police officer speaking to Indian Express has said, “With the help of technical surveillance, police traced and apprehended him. The juvenile was produced in front of the Juvenile Justice Board and handed over to his brother, who is a software engineer.”

The juvenile hails from Uttar Pradesh and is pursuing a technical course from a central university in Delhi. His father has been informed about the incident, who stays abroad. A senior police officer said, in the investigation the boy told police that, “he had recently learned hacking from the internet. He had been trying to hack several government websites for the last three weeks, but failed. Ultimately, he found the commission’s website was vulnerable and hacked it.”

UPSC is the country's premium recruitment agency that is set up to conduct recruitment processes and examinations for various central government jobs. The government website was restored in few hours after it was hacked. Earlier this year in april the official website of the Supreme Court of India was also hacked.
